Au cours d'un bombardement, il fait la connaissance de Soledad, une jeune fille qui vit de ses charmes. Bien que tout les sépare, ils sont irrésistiblement attirés l'un par l'autre. Un événement vient bouleverser la relative quiétude de la ville : la relique du sang de saint Jacques, qui reposait au sein de la cathédrale, s'est volatilisée. Cette mystérieuse disparition est considérée à l'unanimité comme une malédiction. Les autorités décident de tout mettre en oeuvre pour retrouver la relique. En fait, celle-ci est entre les mains d'Arturo, qui la tient d'un chanoine mourant...
