THE WRECK OF THE MARY DEARE (CARGAISON DANGEREUSE) 1 223 000 entrées en FRANCE
De Michael ANDERSON avec Gary COOPER et Charlton HESTON
En pleine tempête, John Sands, patron d'un remorqueur, manque d'être éperonné dans la Manche par un imposant cargo. La collision est évitée d'extrême justesse. Il s'approche, hèle l'équipage mais n'obtient pas de réponse. Le navire semble abandonné. Sands se hisse à bord du bâtiment : c'est le «Mary-Deare», de Hongkong. Il finit par découvrir un homme hagard, qui lui ordonne de s'en aller. Sands tente de rejoindre son remorqueur, mais la tempête l'en empêche. Il se voit donc contraint de rester à bord avec l'inquiétant inconnu, qui se révèle être Gerald Patch, le capitaine du navire. Sands accuse aussitôt Patch d'avoir sabordé le «Mary-Deare»..

John Nordley, un marin américain établi en Angleterre, organise le transport maritime de personnes désireuses de quitter discrètement le pays. Il conduit ainsi aux Pays-Bas, contre une forte somme d'argent, un dénommé Anselm. Mais à son arrivée, celui-ci décède mystérieusement. Avant d'alerter la police, Nordley inspecte les affaires du défunt et s'empare d'un plan. Peu après, une jeune femme, prétendant être la fille d'Anselm, fouille de fond en comble la cabine et fuit lorsque Nordley la surprend. Convoqué par l'inspecteur Van der Stoor, Nordley est suspecté d'avoir empoisonné son client, qui était un policier néerlandais en service commandé...
